about

Our plans to be in the studio on Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend January 2022 were, like a lot of things, cancelled by COVID. This made me anxious. And antsy. And wanting to put something out into the world. One of my New Year's Resolutions (which are printed out and pinned next to my desk) reads RECORD AND RELEASE MUSIC!!!!!!.

I decided to spend the weekend writing and recording a full album of songs based on titles I solicited through Instagram. I wanted the project to be rapid fire. At best, I could practice letting go of some of my hang-ups around making sure everything is "perfect.” Allow limitation to play its part in creation. At worst, I could give everyone a glimpse into the state of most of my songs when I first share them with the band.

I got 28 suggestions for song titles and decided that I would do them all, releasing them in whatever form they came out. As I started writing, I formed themes across the songs and decided to record them as four "suites" that each told a different story of a moment in time. Then my cat had a cat emergency and needed to spend most of the weekend in the cat hospital. Clearly, the universe was not particularly interested in hearing "The Isolation Tapes, Vol. 1" in its 28-song glory. But I refused to release nothing. I finished one suite of 7 songs. I decided to release that rather than scrap the whole project.

This is the result. "The Isolation Tapes, Vol.1: Mall Security Retirement Blues." Seven songs across roughly 8 minutes telling the story of a small-time security guard's dreams of heroism coming unfortunately true. It's what I imagine Die Hard is probably about. I've never seen Die Hard. Despite a lot of setbacks in a short amount of time, this was a lot of fun to make and flexed a few of the decision-making muscles that I hope will help us get a few more fully-realized projects out into the world.

Listen while you can. This will be a Bandcamp-only release and will only be available until we decide it is no longer available.
