about
"Funeral Song" was among the first songs I started writing for what originally was meant to be an album home-recorded during the pandemic. As the collection of songs I was writing at the time took shape, the story evolved to fit a common thread: choosing love over the fear of love ending.
"Funeral Song" tells the story of two people newly in love and already making plans for what happens when one of them inevitably outlives the other. Despite the title of the song and the subject matter, the music reflects my personal feelings about the tradition of funerals: they should be a true celebration. The arrangement reflects an evolution of The Only Humans' sound while still remaining characteristic of what I feel makes us unique.
Accompanying the single is The Only Humans' first music video. Directed by Pete DeBarros, the video tells the heartfelt story of four wayward park rangers who, through the help of the ghost of the lost man they're trying to find, learn how to believe in themselves through the power of dance. Or something like that.

lyrics
The house lights came back up
There was no second encore
We tore into the streets like rabid dogs
Looking for a meal
You jumped into my front seat
And turned the radio up loud
And we pretended not to notice
We missed the only exit home
And at my funeral, they won’t sing “Amazing Grace”
They’ll sing, “We can be ‘Heroes’ just for one day”
And you knew that we’d run out of gas
But you didn’t say, “I told you so.”
You just took my stupid hand
And walked me down a road
We’d never find if we tried
And the road turned into a field
And our lives rolled out
In every imaginable direction
And at my funeral, as they lower me down
They’ll all sing, “The boys are back in town”
And you’ve never been so lost
That you couldn’t eventually find yourself
You’ve never been so far outside a city
You could see this many stars
And from the hood of my car
We drew complex constellations
A cosmic map of where we’ll meet in another life
We looked away for a second and we couldn’t find it again
When time catches up with the two of us, we’ll find it then
And at my funeral, they’ll play “Highway to Hell”
And “Let It Be”
And “Save the Last Dance for Me”
